Artist Statement

I am a local Contemporary Artist who paints in oils. I use colour to convey my emotional relationship to my subjects, which are often drawn from the natural world. My work is influenced in particular by post impressionism and expressionism, including artists such as Cezanne, Van Gogh and Vlaminck. Attracted to using line and colour in my work, I rarely use conventional perspective and like to explore the boundaries between figuration and abstraction.

I am based near Burton on Trent and am often inspired by nearby locations, for example the Staffordshire/Derbyshire countryside as well as local historic sites. I have started to pursue my artistic career seriously over the last three years and this summer exhibited most of my recent work at my exhibition ‘Colour - the Journey Continues' at the Brewhouse in Burton. I have exhibited at a number of locations in the Midlands as well as London. Originally self taught, I have recently completed a Diploma in Oil Painting at the Norfolk Painting School.
