Artist Statement
As a teacher/maker I have experienced many aspects of working with clay. In my current work I make garden and alpine planters, decorative wall plaques and sculptural forms, using hand-building techniques and a range of high-fired and frost-proof clays. Inspiration is based on the landscape around my home, now on the Cowal peninsula, Argyll, the west coast of Scotland, where I am surrounded by hills, forestry, lochs and glens. I am also greatly inspired by relics of the past in the form of Neolithic ‘Rock Art’, Standing Stones and medieval carvings. I search these out on my travels whenever I can. This in turn has led me to be involved in some hands-on archaeological projects. The Green Man is a particular favourite, often found in country churches, including several in Derbyshire. Such characters inspire my designs for wall plaques, planters and free-standing sculptures. I take commissions, run workshops and offer demonstrations from my studio by the shores of Holy Loch and am a member of the Scottish Potters Association, Cowal Open Studios, The Glasgow Society of Women Artists and the Paisley Art Institute.
