Artist Statement

My subject matter focuses upon the landscape around me or Italian architecture. I particularly like to show the decaying effects on buildings. I also like to include some element of life within my paintings, be that the human figure, birds, fish,water etc.
I work from drawings and photos, often making a preparatory drawing in charcoal or pastel before commencing the actual piece. I enjoy using mixed media including prepared and saved papers of various kinds, charcoal pastels and pencil crayons alongside acrylics. I take a long time over a painting and the process usually includes scraping, sanding and reapplying layers until I am satisfied with the work. The work is semi-abstract to real and I usually leave some aspect of it that shows unfinished areas. Most of my work is on a medium to large scale.
