Artist Statement

I am a mixed media artist, better known in recent years for my Artist Books and Printmaking. My commitment to ceramics increased over the past 3 years, when, like many, I went into a more reclusive mode because of the pandemic. In particular, I have found the immediacy of working clay with my hands is incredibly satisfying, and I have focused on this technique. These strong forms have cried out for further expression with decoration. My etching and monoprinting skills developed in printmaking have enabled me to develop various themes in my work. I have started working on a number of series of both single pieces and assemblages. The Land Series has been inspired by Aboriginal designs and symbols. I have use sgraffito techniques to draw the images and tell a story. The Assemblages are composed of many pieces that relate to make a whole, and occupy a space either horizontally or vertically. The Elements Series are shallow monoprinted dishes. These express movement of air, sky or water. I am inspired by the sky and sea after residing on the East Coast at Runswick Bay for a number of years and this seems to be driving my work at present.
