Artist Statement

I love to dabble, experimenting playfully with many materials and methods. My recent work has focussed on sculpture in metal, wood, and stone, for house and garden. Over the years my creative practice has included photography, multimedia and digital installations, and three-dimensional work in stone, wood, metal, and mixed media. In my career as an academic vascular surgeon my interests were in research methods, evidence-based healthcare, decision theory, and computer modelling. Through my forays into artistic practice, I have come to see art and science, not as providing competing world views, but as complimentary fields, each having a vital place in adding to our understanding of the world around us, and our place in it. My research interests have extended into my artistic practice, seeking to understand the ways in which art can contribute to our tacit and explicit knowledge and how it can help in elucidating the values and preferences that are fundamental to our decision-making processes.
