Ann Lyon

Location: Hayfield   /  Genre: Ceramics

Artist Statement

Ann’s focus is the construction of hand built ceramic pots and sculptures in both stoneware and earthenware clay.
Her work is influenced by the strong, bold shapes of traditional ceramic pots.
The original shape is then decorated with detail and colour to reflect the natural forms and lines of the environment, particularly that of the Peak District. Underglazes are used to create the subtle and changing colours of the landscape with further enhancement by transparent glazes.
Working from observation, photographs and pictures and moving away from her work on ceramic pots, Ann has used the idea of a ‘plaque’ to represent the built up and natural environments of the surrounding area. Oxides rather than glazes are used in this context to highlight shapes and contours.
In contrast to her landscape work, figures and heads, based on photographs of characters from the past, form part of her work.
Ann’s wide ranging work offers a unique perspective on the environment, places and people.
