Artist Statement
I trained at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen specialising in Sculpture and Ceramics. After a break to allow for a career in Arts Administration, Gallery Education and Teaching as well as bringing up a family I have now returned to my own creativity. I have been working as a professional ceramic artist for 10 years. I started initially by selling at school fairs and have now developed my customer base and sell my work in galleries from Lymington all the way up to Orkney. I also show my work throughout the year at direct selling events big and small including Only Clay in Sheffield. I am a member of Peak District Artisans.Working from my garden in Derbyshire I make small scale ceramic sculptures that are based on
wildlife, including coastal and moorland birds, sea mammals, and woodland animals. They are burnished, smoke fired and created over weeks to delight the hand as well as the eye. My firings use only natural materials such as seaweed, banana skins and heather. Experimenting with a range of effects is what I find compulsive in my work. Recently I have been adding a detail of gold leaf to some works to attract the magpie in us all.
