Terry Baker

Location: Sheen, Buxton   /  Genre: Digital art and photography

Artist Statement

Terry is an artist and photographer who, through a combination of both disciplines, produces digital artwork deeply influenced by the School of Surrealism. His inspiration comes from the work of artists such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy.

He is also fascinated by the randomness of nature and events, be they serendipitous or calamitous. He believes in a wholly irrational and illogical world where the subconscious reigns unfettered and supreme.

He graduated with a BA in Fine Art, subsequently studied for an MA in Photography, and is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. Having taught art and photography for over 30 years he now works full time on his art in the Peak District National Park, where he has a small studio.

Much of Terry’s unusual work often derives from his own extreme close-up photography. The photographs are taken through a series of physical manipulations including tearing and burning, and often combined with other materials to create small collages. These in turn are rephotographed and digitally edited. The final images, being digital files, are printed in limited editions of various sizes.

He also enjoys photographing landscapes and cityscapes which he digitally transforms into his vision of an alternative (and sometimes ominous) reality.

Terry exhibits internationally and has had work exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
