Location: Ambergate, Belper   /  Genre: textile artist

Artist Statement

Steph Jansen creates stunning, painterly landscapes in wet felt, inspired by traces of history in the Derbyshire countryside and a passion for vibrant colours and rich textures. The work is developed from pencil, charcoal and watercolour sketches made while out walking. Back at her home studio in Ambergate, Steph creates her felts by layering deeply coloured and textural wools, silks and fibres, Once a design is complete, the fibres are wetted down with warm, soapy water and rubbed, rolled and thrown until they become a strong piece of fabric. This is then rinsed and left to dry, before being mounted for display.
