Artist Statement

Since retiring nearly a decade ago, I have been able to indulge my long-standing interest in calligraphy and hand-lettering. Working in a variety of media, but most usually acrylic and calligraphic inks, I depict the natural world with poems, prose and songs about birds, animals and insects, usually in the form of calligrams - images consisting entirely of lettering in the form of the relevant creature.
I also sometimes produce work with just the lyric of a song, or the words of a poem, as a stand-alone image.
My interest in collage dates back to my time at Liverpool School of Art in the early 1970's, and is something I've revived recently, now that I've more time on my hands. Having my own studio, I can work on a slightly larger scale now, quite often choosing the Four Seasons as my subject matter.
